Door Closers for Fire Safety

As the very name implies, door closers are mechanical devices that help in shutting the doors in the event of safety. It is necessary to take up preventive measures in the event of an emergency, and thus door closers is one such device that helps to do so. Mechanical door closers are devices that help to close doors automatically if someone opens it or even if it was automatically opened. Door closers, in general, fit in a different kind of criteria for varied performance and features, but the main key feature of its performance lies in the event of a fire accident, where automatic door closers play an important part.

How can the door closer help in the event of a fire or a mishap? Unlike normal doors, there are fire doors that resist or prevent fire from setting in. These doors feature fire resistance ratings and are thus categorized and sold based on their performance and the price ranges depending on the level of safety provided. Although using a fire resistant door might not serve as a strong means of protecting the room from fire, it is a passive measure that helps to keep away fire for a certain period of time. If the door is closed manually, the mechanism works by storing the energy that is required in the opening of the door so that it is spent by the door closer in closing it.

If the fire should try to set in, these closers at least prevent the escape of the smoke from one room to another. In that way, the chances of the fire spreading is prevented to a certain extent. This is extremely important because, the smoke that escapes triggers the event of another hazard by the electrical installation in the room. Thus, it leads to a chain of events that lead to a massive fire attack, leading to total destruction and unwanted hassle. These fire doors are usually in conjunction with fire dampers that help to wade off and dampen the fire. Thus, they can be separated from these dampers with ease, if they are not an integral part of the wall or do not separate the rooms.

These fire doors are made of a combination of timber, gypsum, steel, and thus can help in the prevention of fire. Moreover, the addition of automatic closers tends to enhance the level of safety by automatic closure of these doors in the event of a fire mishap. These closers tend to close the door immediately after opening them, and thus the spread of smoke and fire is prevented even before it gets out of hand. Besides the safety features, these doors also help to prevent the leakage of cool air and thus, help to maintain the temperature at an even pace.

These closers for fire safety can be either open or concealed. However, despite the type of door closer used, it is important that the door closer features a long life and act well in the event of a fire mishap.

Fire Extinguishers for Your Safety

There are quite a few concerns as to whether fire extinguishers are really as safe as you once believed, but when it is between life and death, you will be thrilled that you remembered to keep one in the house so that you won't die in a fire. Sometimes it is better to just escape if it has gone out of control, but if the fire is still contained, you have a chance to put it out with a fire extinguisher. It can be a daunting task to find the right one because of the wide array of choices. How do you know which is right for you, and what will work the best? It could be a CO2 fire extinguisher, foam, water additive (water is added to potassium acetate and it is used for fires made from combustible materials) powder, water (only good for type A fires, stay away from electricity), automatic (like sprinkler systems) and even a wet chemical fire extinguisher. After you find the right one, you have to make sure you know exactly how to use it and when.

Finding the right type of fire extinguisher is easier than you think. You can get an ABC store pressure type multipurpose dry chemical that is filled with monoammmonium phosphate. This leaves a sticky residue and can be damaging to appliances, but can put out many different kinds of fire. Class A is fire that is caused by paper, wood and cloth, and B class is caused from inflammable liquids like kerosene, paints, and petrol. Then the extinguisher still covers the C class fires that come from gases from electrical equipment like a motor, LPG, or Acetylene. Automatic extinguishers can be installed for specific purposes like industrial, chemical or boat storage facilities. Other pre-engineered systems can be used in home settings, and they are better than sprinklers because there is less damage, and are affordable.

About 374,900 residential buildings are reported to burn each year, causing about 2,630 deaths. Fires and burns are the leading cause of home injuries and death, though it is hard to know how many of these places had fire extinguishers, most of them probably didn't. 62% of reported home fire deaths resulted in having no smoke alarms or faulty ones. This tells you that people are not doing what they can to prevent a fire. There should be extinguishers on every level of any building, especially in the kitchen and garage. It is important to have a extinguisher in the kitchen because cooking is the leading cause of fire in small, confined areas which could be prevented easily with a fire extinguisher.

As you can tell from these statistics, it is important to have at least one fire extinguisher, or an automatic fire extinguisher system. Don't just rely on smoke alarms that may or may not work. Remember to study up on these and buy the right one, especially if you deal with any specific type of flammable material.

Safety Tips - Is Your Home Safe While You Are Away Traveling?

How Safe Is Your Home While You Are on Vacation?

Your trip is planned, you have chosen your destination, your luggage is packed, you are getting ready to depart. You have taken every precaution to ensure that you have a safe enjoyable trip. Do you think you have forgotten anything? Have you overlooked anything? Have you taken every precaution to ensure your home is secured while you are traveling?

I have listed a few safety tips that my husband and I do to ensure that our home is safe while we are away enjoying ourselves. A few of these safety tips are pretty standard and utilized by most travelers. Some of them are for our own personal needs. Every traveler will have different ways of securing their home and have their own safety tips depending on their personal circumstances.

Common Safety Tips

We have our newspaper delivery stopped for the length of time we are away.
We tell our neighbor that we will be away and for how long. We give them all our contact information for our destination.
We have our neighbor pick up our mail every day. You can have it held at the post office but we have found that sometimes they do not do it right away which means there is mail sitting in your mailbox and you do not even know it.
If it is possible in your place of residence you can also get your local police to do a few house checks for you while you are gone. (This may not be possible in all residential areas) Definitely something to look into in your area.
Ask a neighbor or a family member to shovel the snow or cut the grass, depending on time of year that you are traveling. An unkept yard may indicate that no one is home to a professional thief.
For garbage pickup, you can ask your neighbor to put out a bag of their garbage in front of your home for pickup.
Make sure to check all windows and doors are locked.
If you own two vehicles, find out if you can get a family member, friend or neighbor to move your car around while you are away. (Our neighbor puts our car in the garage at night and brings it back out in the day)

Our Own Safety Tip

I know this sounds crazy but our dog cannot be put into a kennel, she hates being put into a cage. So we leave her at home. She has her own doggie door to get in and out. She also makes a good watch dog, mind you her bark is worse than her bite. Our neighbor, who is given a key to our house will feed our dog every day and actually stay and watch television with our dog. Passersby think that we are actually home. Our dog does not wander from home, so this actually works for us.

These are the safety tips that we follow. We have a great neighbor that has the time to help us implement these safety tips. In return, when they go away we do the same thing. It is a win win situation. This type of co-operation from a really good neighbor, friend or family member saves money because you do not have to pay someone to do it for you and you have piece of mind knowing your home is secure while you are away.

Keep Your Family Safe With These Safety Tips

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Protecting your family can be quite a challenge, and it's only natural to want to do everything possible to ensure they remain safe and healthy. Unfortunately it impossible to protect your family from every bad thing in the world, but when it comes to your home there are things everyone can do to help keep safe. Just like a sports team working towards a goal, a family working together, can help ensure family safety. Here are 5 family safety tips that can help your family conquer some common household dangers.

1) A fire is reported every 45 seconds, and almost 180,000 people a year are hospitalized for burns in the U.S. According to the American Red Cross, the most common disaster in the country is household fires. The first step is to install a smoke alarm on every floor of your house, and in any room where the door is commonly kept closed. Just be aware that it takes more than a smoke alarm and early warning to protect your family from a house fire, it takes planning. It's imperative to develop an escape plan for the family in case of an emergency. A monthly practice drill is vital so that everyone knows instinctively what to do and where to go, if a fire should happen. Another step is to conduct monthly tests to check if each fire alarm is working properly, and to make sure to replace the batteries every six months.

2) Get your home tested for radon leaks. The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Radon is found all over the U.S. and comes from natural radioactive gas that you can't detect, since it has no odor. Getting your home's radon level tested is easy and relatively inexpensive, plus it's the only way to know if your home has a leak. If tests show excess amount of radon in your home, the leak can usually be fixed with proper repairs.

3) Protect your family from carbon monoxide. It is estimated that 200 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year, and that number could be higher. Many times the victim will suffer the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning without knowing it. So it's important to know the symptoms of CO poisoning. The symptoms of CO poisoning are very similar to the flu. Symptoms include; nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue and weakness, headaches, sleepiness, and confusion. If anyone in your family start showing signs of CO poisoning, immediately open windows and doors and go to the emergency room, and report the suspected CO poisoning. Carbon Monoxide Detectors are an excellent way to get early warning of a carbon monoxide leak in your home. Just as with fire detector CO detectors should be installed on every level of your home as well as in any routinely closed room. Never use a gas range burner, or ignite coals inside your home. Keep your garage ventilated to reduce car emissions, and don't let your motor run while inside a closed garage.

4) Defend your home from burglaries and home break-ins. FBI reported, in 2009 that the average home burglaries value was over $2k. Their research also showed that more home burglaries occurred during daylight rather than at night. Protecting your family from burglaries will take team work. Teach the kids to never open the door unless they can see and identify the person, and if they don't recognize them, then they must verify with an adult if the person has a legitimate reason for knocking at your door. Home burglary is generally a crime of opportunity, and the criminal will always try to avoid drawing attention. This makes home security systems a good deterrent to have. In fact a third of all home break-ins, the burglar found his way in through unlock doors or window. All family members must take responsibility for always locking doors and bedroom windows. Another preventive measure is to install motion activated lights in order to deter intruders from hiding in the dark. To monitor your home while you're away, installing security cameras can help you keep an eye on your property.

5) Falls are the leading cause on nonfatal injuries seen in hospital emergency rooms for all ages. Use home safety devices, such as sensors or guards on windows to keep children from falling or climbing out of windows. Grab bars and rails in bathrooms help reduce accidents, especially for the elderly. Make sure everyone does their part to keep stairways, and hall ways clear of debris, toys, or anything that can cause someone to trip. For households with young children, gates at the top of stairs help keep children from falling. And lastly nightlights to illuminate dark rooms and pathways at night make it easy to avoid accidents while getting up from bed.

How to Prepare Your Home for Safety Today With a Few Simple Steps

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

With the changes taking place throughout the world both through economic fall out and natural disasters, it is crucial that you are prepared! As the saying goes, it is better to proactive, that reactive, you should start taking the necessary steps today to get yourself prepared for the unexpected.

This preparation should start from the home. This is your castle and should be protected to the fullest extent allowed by law. The problem is that most people live with the mindframe that it won't happen to them. Perhaps they live in a nicer neighborhood. This means nothing to a burglar, besides the fact that there might be nicer things to steal or damage.

If you have even seen one in the movies, they typically like to move around in the dark, where they can easily hide. Having proficient lighting around ones home can easily deter someone from hanging out too close. If you have shrubbery, bushes and trees growing next to the house, these should be cut back as well to not allow ample space in which to hide. Having your windows covered as well might not allow you to look outside to see what might be lurking.

Another inexpensive fix you can take today is to find security stickers or lawn signs that depict your home is wired to an alarm system. Again, burglars, typically are looking for little or no recognition and want to get in and get out with out getting hurt themselves. If they are to force their way in, or set off an alarm, they are going to panic. If they see lots of light, especially a motion light (one that goes on when someone trips the laser beam) they are more likely to visit someone else's home.

Now do not get me wrong here, we do not want our neighbors place being broken into either and you should have them read this article as well....matter of fact, be sure to forward the link to this article to all your family and friends, so that they can benefit from a safer environment as well.

Burglars also like to hit homes when they know predictable patterns are being followed, like when you leave in the morning and come back in the evening. If you are away on vacation and they see the newspapers piling up and mail spilling our of the box, they also realize this is an excellent opportunity to strike. They are looking to take advantage of the situation.

When you take the proper precautions to prevent these issues, the intruder is likely to keep going on. Having someone house sit for you, getting your deliveries daily will make them think someone is being active in the house and it is not worth their time.

As you have invested heavily into your homes, by paying money every year to insure it, you might as well take simple precautions to protect it as well. You can be on your way to a safer home by spending a few hours completing the suggestions mentioned here, so take action today.

David Gardner has taken the necessary steps, but is always looking to share the ideas he has as well as ones he has learned. You can come learn more about home security as well as how to prepare for natural disasters, financial fallout, gun safety and much more at http://howtogetprepared.com/ where he would love to read your comments.

Some Useful Advice About Fire Safety in Your Home

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Let's face it, we do live in a Nanny state, and we are always getting bombarded with advice on how to stay fit and healthy; we are told not to drive too fast, not to eat too much, to wear seat belts when we drive, not to drink when we drive, and so much more. It seems that the only place to be, where there are no safety rules are our houses; but of course this is not true and not to be too dramatic, we are often living in a ticking time bomb, when it comes to fire safety standards in our houses. Here are some very simple, and gentle ideas to get your accommodation at least up to the minimum safety requirements for fire hazard.

If it moves and has a flame, it is potentially dangerous. Candles, moveable gas heaters and your BBQ are all sources of potential danger in the home. Don't light any of those candles, get your Gas heaters serviced by a professional every year, and get a proper BBQ built.

Fit some isolation switches in your kitchen so at least if an electrical fire occurs you can switch off the source of the trouble without pitching the house into darkness. Find out where you gas turn off switch is and make sure it is easy to turn.

Don't smoke in the house, and definitely not in bed or lying down, and make sure if you do smoke that there are big enough ash trays in the garden.

Get you electric plugs services annually, and never use two adaptors together with lots of appliances plugged in.

Get rid of old electrical equipment and buy something new with the approved fire safety markings.

Buy some smoke alarms, they are not very expensive and extremely easy to fit. You need at least one on every floor and the Kitchen is one of the main areas. Having fitted the smoke detectors, this is not the end of the story, as they need to be tested at least every two months to make sure that they still work.

Buy and fit to the wall a fire extinguisher, and a fire blanket. There are a different types of extinguisher for different combustible materials, but a good all-rounder is the CO2 extinguisher. Make sure that you know how to use the extinguisher, and get it maintained at least every two years.

The above tips are provided to get your home up to a certain minimum standard, but of course every home is different with different hazards, so if in doubt, consult your local Fire Station and they will be delighted to help.

Fire Safety in The Kitchen - How to Prevent Or Put Out a Kitchen Fire

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Kitchens are dangerous places, and you must have certain unwritten safety rules that you abide by, to make sure that food preparation does not turn into a tragedy. Kitchens by their very nature, are places with naked flames, boiling water, hot oils, sharp knives and many more hazards. With proper guidelines, a kitchen becomes a safe environment; these are the types a rules you should have in place.

Always clean cookers and work surfaces both during and after cooking. You should especially be aware of fat build up around any areas with a naked flame. A grease free kitchen is a safer kitchen.

Never use pans that have loose handles. At the first sign that a handle is not 100% attached to the pan, throw it away.

Don't over-fill pans or frying pans so that they can spill over.

Keep children out of the kitchen when you are cooking.

Absolutely never leave pans unattended; remember that when you start to cook, you are in charge of potentially dangerous implements that could kill or maim other members of your family and/or start a fire.

Always keep the correct fire extinguisher in the kitchen, along with a specially designed Fire Blanket.

Educate other members of your family in good safety procedures in the kitchen.

It is a good idea with smaller children to install a safety gate to the door of the kitchen, to keep them out.

Have a special isolation trip switch fitted in the kitchen to be able to turn off electricity in case of fire. In the case of gas cookers, you should be aware where the switch for turning off the gas is.

Fit a smoke detector in the Kitchen.

Never let domestic animals into the kitchen area, as they can be a tripping hazard.

If you have these rules in place, then your kitchen area will become a much safer place; however if a fire does occur then there are certain rules you should know to enable you to put it out. One of the most common fires in the kitchen is a fat or oil fire. If one of these happens, then it is imperative that you don't put water on it to try to put it out, as this will cause the fire to start to 'spit' and possibly spread it to other areas. The way to put one of these fires out is by starving it of oxygen, and you do this by placing a fire blanket over the pan. On no account pick up a burning pan and try to carry it into the garden. If you don't have a fire blanket, then (calmly) thoroughly wet a towel or dish cloth, squeeze it out to get rid of excess water, and place it over the pan, and this will have the same effect. For grease fires behind the cooker you should use a CO2 or powder extinguisher.

Remember; the best defence against fire, is prevention and not fighting.
