It is not unusual to be worried about the security of your home when all you seem to hear about is crime and vandalism. Choosing from the hundreds of home security systems on the market is a task that requires careful consideration. You want to make your home as secure as possible without spending too much to achieve this.

You need to take a common-sense approach to home security as you want it to deter criminals and vandals, but you do not necessarily want to turn your home into a fortress. If you have already been the victim of crime, security can become an obsession and you can go a bit over the top and spend a lot more than you need to, or more than you can afford to spend.

There are a number of simple do-it-yourself steps you can take to make your property secure at reasonable cost. Safety locks for doors, and windows can be bought from hardware stores and come with easy to follow fitting instructions. Alternatively, you can hire a professional locksmith to supply and fit them for you. The same applies to safety chains for your external doors.

Install some security lighting on the exterior of your house. Motion sensitive lights can be set to activate when something comes within a set distance from the building. They can be switched off, if necessary during daylight hours, but you need to be disciplined about switching them back on, or add a timer switch. They are reasonably cheap to buy and easy to install, or you can hire a professional to supply and fit them.

If you live in an apartment building installing an extra lock, and a safety chain is a good idea. Many apartment buildings have some type of safety arrangements such as a manned reception, or a telephone buzz in system. If your building does not have alarm systems, you may want to talk to the other occupants or the landlord about installing some, especially if you live in a high-crime area. As a minimum precaution ensure that all halls and stairways are always well lit and have a spy hole on your door.

Taking other simple and common sense precautions can save you from becoming the victim of crime. Checking that windows and doors are locked and secure should be a routine task at bedtime, and if you are going out. Putting a few internal lights on a timer switch helps to provide the impression that someone is home.

Always remember to cancel the newspaper or other regular deliveries if you are going away for a few days or longer. Never leave a spare key in where you think is a safe hiding place outside your home. If you are going away for a few days, give someone whom you trust with a key and to your place. You can ask them to keep an eye on your place too.

Purchase a security marking pen and put your name or address on different items. Try to do this on your most cherished and valuable possessions. It will not stop them being stolen but it makes it easier to trace them if the worst does happen.
