Security is a three-step process: Detection, Protection and Conviction.
Detection
To say we have security is to say we have the means to detect someone is somewhere they don't belong. We can use security alarms triggered by the physical movement of something like a window or door opening, or infrared movement of a person or animal within a space. These alarms can tell us silently or we can use a loud alarm to will most probably scare off the intruder. Most intruders don't like bright light or noise. However in a remote area or one that becomes remote at night, weekends or holidays, the noise may not help to deter. Today we are able to connect our surveillance system to the internet and monitor our system from anywhere in the world.
Protection
The average citizen should not try to confront an intruder. Unless you are a trained law enforcement officer, you probably have not been trained in the use of lethal force. Another factor is the willingness to discharge a lethal weapon that may cause the death or permanent injury of another human being. Thankfully most people do not have the willingness to harm someone else. Bringing a gun to battle and not being willing to use it immediately, will just arm your intruder. Or the worst case scenario is that you have a family member or friend who has accidently triggered an alarm. Law enforcement does not go willingly out to harm anyone, but they are trained to know the time and place for lethal intervention. There are the occasions when confrontation cannot be avoided, as when the intruder enters you bedroom or confronts you in a parking lot. This is when you should have and use non-lethal defense. There is a large variety of MACE, Pepper Spray, Tasers and Stun Guns available to carry for this purpose. They can be carried on your belt in your pocket or purse or in the nightstand beside your bed. This will disable the intruder long enough for you to run for help or call the authorities.
Conviction
It's a terrible thing to think about, but intruders like to return to the scene of the crime. Most people think that they have been there and will not return. This is far from the truth, as a criminal if successful or even if they fail think that the next time they have it all figured out, and will not be detected a second time. We need to put these people in jail before they rob or harm someone else. Your chance of subduing the intruder and holding them for the police is about one in five cases or 20%. In most cases we hope to scare them away or run away for our own protection. What if you are not present? Then we want to know who was there and what they did. Video surveillance allows you to monitor your home or business from anywhere and gives you a record that will stand up in court.
As you can see from the previous text security for home or business is multi-faceted. Remember when setting your security in place that you will probably be robbed or your home or business will be intruded upon in darkness. Have a good flashlight with a strong beam that will last a long time. Also the flashlight should have a sealed battery compartment to keep out moisture. Stay safe and remember nothing is as valuable as a human life.
