Let's not beat about the bush; a fire in the home can happen at any time, and this article asks a simple question about your system (if any) for prevention and fire fighting in your home. Are you doing enough? Are you doing anything? Well; imagine that you lived in an isolated house in the country. You are not particularly rich, and don't have that many items of value in the house; but would you go out, or go to bed and leave the doors and windows open? Why not? You are far from a built up area and the chance of a thief passing by chance is minimum. But a minimum chance that is hardly likely to happen doesn't stop you from closing your property properly at night or when you go out. You are not prepared to take the chance however slight with your possessions. So what about your family, aren't they more valuable than your possessions? So why not protect them from injury or death caused by fire. Here are some simple tips to at least start to protect your home from fire.
kitchen fires can be avoided by never walking away from the cooker when there is something being cooked on it. Most common causes of this are telephone calls, someone knocking the door and children or other people distracting you. Get a telephone line fitted in your kitchen or use a mobile. Before going to the door or going to see which of your children has had the accident, turn the cooker off.
Check the wiring in your house on a regular basis and never use lots of plugs in multi adaptors. Throw away or service older electrical appliances.
Don't use those candles the children gave you for your birthday. Keep them as ornaments and if you want to create a romantic mood, fit dimmer switches to your lights.
Don't smoke in your house, and especially in bed or in a lying down position.
Get smoke alarms fitted downstairs and up, and check them at least every two months to see that they are still working.
Buy a fire extinguisher and fire blanket. There are various types of extinguisher, but a general all-purpose type that is easy to use is a CO2, which should be fitted on a wall and checked annually.
Fire and smoke can spread rapidly through a house, and put your family at risk. The above list is not the end, but the beginning of making your home less at risk to fire damage.
